| Not
many years ago, a small group of people from West Virginia began a campaign to
set aside a special day for Grandparents. It took five years for Congress to pass
the legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents
Day. September was selected for this day to symbolize the autumn years
of life. I have been very fortunate to have my
grandparents as a large part of my life. Growing up, I lived close to my paternal
grandparents and have great memories of the times I spent with them as a child.
Moving away to college put me close to my maternal grandparents. so I was able
to get to know them even better than once a year visits had previously allowed.
My grandparents came from very different areas of the country and have very different
backgrounds. They had different life experiences and it has been fascinating to
learn about the branches of my family tree, through them. My
paternal grandmother is 98 years old and, as you can imagine, has seen an immense
| |
amount of change in her lifetime. While
we dont have scrapbooks, my family is fortunate to have some pictures and
lots of written information about her life. But still, there are times I wonder
about the things she saw and did and wish I knew more. So,
when I look at the scrapbooks I have sitting on my shelves, I remember that someday
I may have a granddaughter or grandson who will want to know where Grandma traveled
to, what it was like to see the Olympics, what she did for work, or what were
her favorite things. Think about the questions
you want to ask your grandparents and then answer them yourself. Celebrate National
Grandparents Day by learning more about your grandparents or making sure that
your children and grandchildren will be able to learn about you and your life
through the records that you keep in photos and writing. Michelle@LetteringDelights.com
