The end of May brings with it the Memorial Day holiday weekend, most commonly known as the ‘unofficial’ start of summer. Picnics and bar-b-ques will abound; summer vacation homes open up; the beaches begin to fill; and the school year is quickly coming to an end. Of course, Memorial Day was established as a day to honor those who have passed on and we have celebrated that for many years in my family by decorating the graves of family members with flowers. And whenever I think of this tradition, I think of a photo taken one memorial day weekend at the cemetery, about 25 years ago. It’s not really anything special; just a candid shot of my younger brother playing on the grass; He’s 2 or 3 years old, wearing a striped romper and has the most beautiful golden curls in his hair.

Thinking of that photo made me realize how valuable the pictures that we take, can be. We often think of photos and scrapbooks as a way to recall and share great events or

experiences, but they don’t have to be just that. I don’t actually remember that photo of my brother being taken or anything about being at the cemetery that year. But because I saw that photo so many times as a child, I’ve been able to keep that image with me in my mind. It helps me ‘remember’ things that I probably wouldn’t be able to visualize on my own.

As you take the fun day-to-day photos of your family and friends, remember that someday, maybe even 25 years later, someone will be able to remember something or someone because of those photos.

Refer a friend to the Lettering Delights newsletter and you'll both receive a coupon code good for $5 off a purchase of $15 or more. As a new newsletter subscriber, your friend will also receive seven fun and creative Lettering Delights fonts.

Growing up, I remember my mom helping us create ‘coupons’ that we could give to other family members on birthdays or for gift-giving holidays. (Remember that Father’s Day is coming soon.) These coupons would be for a special service or activity that were specifically designed around the interests or needs of the recipient. They could be for anything: babysitting, taking out the trash on your day, a car wash and vacuum, a plate of your favorite chocolate chip cookies or a night out to see a movie of your choice. These ‘coupons’ could then be redeemed by the recipient at a later date.

Using Journaling Delights is a fast and easy way to create some of these ‘coupons’. Best of all, with all of the Journaling Delights themes available, it’s easy to create a coupon that matches the theme of the offer. See these fun samples to get the idea:

  4. Move to the layout page and click the image in the ‘Image’ box to place it on the page. Select the image and then click ‘Size Image’. Choose the dimensions of your ‘coupon’ and enter them in the appropriate boxes. To change the image size proportionally, be sure that the ‘Constrained’ box is checked for the width or height.
  5. Print your custom ‘coupon’ on white (or light colored) cardstock and give it a quick trim to the final size. That’s all there is too it!!
