Last week, I was talking with a friend who recently suffered a severely sprained
ankle and was having some great difficulty getting around. It’s healing
slowly, and he is gaining more mobility, but he commented to me that this
experience has made him really thankful for the ability he does have to
get around and be independent. It was a good reminder to be thankful for
the simple, everyday things, not just the big things.
As I thought more about it, I realized how thankful I am for memories.
The happy ones, the sad ones, and everything in between. There are always
going to be memories I have that are not photographed or written down.
Many are the memories that come to you as a result of another thought,
or are prompted by a similar event or experience. Or those ‘you just
had to be there’ memories that can never quite be explained – like
a recent experience my Dad and I had in a parking garage that left us both
laughing so hard, we were close to tears; no one we explained it to thought
it was quite as funny as we did.

I used to think that I had a good memory and would always remember things
which happened, or people and places. Well, time has caught up with me. And
while I still pride myself on a good memory, it’s not always as good
as I would like it to be. So when the little tid-bits come back to me, for
one reason or another, I try to write them down; especially the ones which
are specific to my family and friends.
My grandmother passed away last June, just a month shy of her 99th birthday.
When I was very young, I was able to spend quite a bit of time with my grandmother,
and since her passing, have tried to jot things down when the memories return.
Whether they are memories of specific events or just something that I remember
we did together, it’s been a rewarding experience.
As we approach this season of thanksgiving, remember to consider the memories;
all of those things that make up the moments and experiences of our lives.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Many
non-profit, health care and social organizations choose a particular month
to actively promote their cause or message. For example, October was Breast
Cancer Awareness month. What
organizations, causes and heath care issues will be actively promoted during
November? Send your answer to fontrivia@LetteringDelights.com
with grin & win on the subject line. All correct answers will
be entered in a drawing to receive your choice of the Borders & Backgrounds
CD or a Typing Delights CD. Please include your mailing address and the CD you
would prefer with your entry. |
Congratulations
to Cheri Steen (Waterloo, IA), Elizabeth Gross (Trumbull, CT) and Kendal Scott
(Bellville, OH), the winners of the October trivia contest. They knew that
chlorophyll is the chemical in leaves that causes the green color to disappear,
revealing the great range of autumn colors.
