Even though Indiana is ranked 38th in land area and is the smallest state in the continental US west of the Appalachian Mountains, its capital and largest city (Indianapolis) is the second largest of any state capital. Indiana may be known for its many major sporting teams and athletic events, including motorsports, but it is also home to several of the best universities in the country.
